Who it's for
People who don't have any permit yet and want to start their legal residence, employed or self-employed, usually from outside Spain.
Who CAN'T apply for it
- If you already live in Spain under another permit, this isn't your procedure — the initial authorization is only for people with no prior Spanish permit, applying from outside Spain.
- In the employed route, the application is filed by the company that's going to hire you, not by you — without a company willing to file it, this route isn't viable, and it's worth considering the self-employed route or, if you're already in Spain, arraigo.
Typical documentation
Full passport (all pages)
Including blank pages and entry/exit stamps, if it has any.
Job offer or employment contract
Signed by the company that's going to employ you in Spain.
Apostilled criminal record certificate
From your country of origin and any country you've lived in over the last 5 years; it must carry the Hague Apostille.
Medical certificate
Certifies you don't have any condition with serious public health implications; issued by any licensed doctor.
Corresponding application form

Who files the application if it's the employed route?
The company that's going to hire you, not you. Without a company willing to file it, this route can't move forward.
What happens after it's approved?
You have 1 month to request the visa, the visa is valid for 3 months to enter Spain, then 3 months from entry to register with Social Security, and 1 more month to request your TIE. The legal resolution deadline is 3 months, and if there's no response by then, it's considered denied.
Who pays each fee?
The worker pays the residence fees (052) and the card fee (012); the work-authorization fee (062) is paid by the employer, not you.
