Who it's for
Any foreign national who is going to carry out financial, employment, or administrative procedures in Spain and doesn't have one yet.
Who CAN'T apply for it
- If you've had a NIE before, you can't apply for a new one even if you lost it or don't remember the number — a NIE never expires or changes. What you need is a certificate confirming the NIE you already have.
- If you're an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen, your procedure isn't the NIE — it's the EU citizen registration certificate (EX-18), a different process.

Does the NIE expire?
No. The NIE is a fixed number that stays with you forever — what can expire is the card or permit linked to it, never the number itself.
Can I apply for a NIE from outside Spain?
Yes, through the Spanish consulate in your country of residence, which manages its own appointment system separately from the one in Spain.
Can I apply for my minor child's NIE?
Yes, whoever holds parental authority can apply, using the family book or birth certificate. If the child is under guardianship or foster care, you'll also need the corresponding judicial or administrative ruling.
