Who it's for
Direct family members (spouse, registered domestic partner, children, dependent parents) of an EU citizen residing in Spain.
Who CAN'T apply for it
- If your EU citizen family member isn't registered in Spain yet and doesn't have their own registration certificate, they need to complete that first — without it, you can't apply for your family card.
- If you're a domestic partner but not officially registered in a civil registry, you need to prove at least 1 year of stable cohabitation or a child in common; without that, your case needs individual review.
- A child over 21 can only qualify for this card if they're economically dependent on the EU citizen or have a recognized disability.
- A parent of the EU citizen needs to prove real economic dependency — without it, the requirement isn't met.

Passport of the applicant
Valid.
ID document of the EU citizen
National ID or passport of the EU family member.
EU citizen registration certificate
Proves your EU family member is registered as a resident in Spain.
Family record book or marriage/partnership certificate
Apostilled and translated if issued in another country.
Proof of cohabitation or financial dependence
Only when the relationship is a dependent parent or child, not a spouse.

What does 'registered domestic partner' mean?
Official registration in a municipal or regional civil registry. Living together for a long time isn't enough on its own — if you're not registered, you'd need the unregistered domestic partner route instead, which requires at least 1 year of cohabitation or a child in common.
Can I apply for this card for my parents?
Yes, if they're provably economically dependent on you, the EU citizen. Without that real economic dependency, it's not granted.
How long does the card last?
Up to 5 years, or however long the EU citizen plans to reside in Spain, whichever is shorter.
