Having parents with legal residence in another country isn’t, on its own, a reason to reunite them in Spain. Reuniting ascendants has one very specific requirement that surprises a lot of people: age.
The requirement: 65 years old, and dependent on you
To reunite an ascendant (a parent, or even a grandparent) you need them to be 65 or older, financially or physically dependent on you, and there need to be justified reasons for them to live in Spain.
What if they haven’t turned 65 yet?
There’s an exception, but it’s narrow: serious humanitarian reasons justifying their residence in Spain despite not reaching that age. It’s not something that can be confirmed in advance — the administration assesses it case by case, based on the specific documentation of your situation.
What the sponsor also has to meet
- At least 1 year of residence in Spain and a permit valid for at least 1 more year — unless you already hold long-term residence, which exempts you from this requirement.
- Stable income of at least 150% of the IPREM index, plus 50% more for each additional family member you reunite.
- Health insurance covering both you and the reunited family member.
- An adequate housing report — request it as early as possible, it takes up to 6 weeks to issue and then expires (the exact window varies by region).
The fee
The reunification application carries a fee of €10.94.
