If you already know you need the certificate for a NIE you were assigned before — not a new NIE — the real obstacle might be something else: you don’t remember the number, the year, or almost anything about that earlier process. Good news: none of that is essential.
Where to submit the application
It depends on whether you’re already in Spain:
- Already in Spain: at the Immigration Office or a Police Station.
- Haven’t traveled yet: at the Spanish Consulate in your country of residence.
You don’t need to remember anything, but it helps if you can
The application asks whether you remember anything about when your NIE was assigned — approximate year, city, or the procedure you requested it for. It’s not essential, but if you remember it helps find your file faster.
Without reference details, the search can take a bit longer, since the National Police has to locate your file using only your identity — but it’s not a blocker, it just may take more time.
What to bring
- A valid passport or ID document.
- The completed EX-15 form — it’s the same official NIE application form, there’s no separate form for the certificate.
- Proof of the fee paid: form 790, code 012 (€7.31), before or on the day of your appointment.
- If you remember any reference details, have them handy — though, as noted, it’s not required.
